New Digital Resources for French as a Second Language Students!

In partnership with the Information and Communication Technology Department, new digital resources are now available to support students in our all of our elementary and secondary French as a Second Language Programs. In our ongoing efforts to improve student learning in these programs, the Encyclopedia Britannica digital resources, Universalis Junior and Universalis Senior have been added to the Student Launchpad. In addition, new French Carousels are now available for students as an online support to the elementary Extended French and French Immersion programs.
The integration of information and communications technologies into the FSL program represents a natural extension of the learning expectations. Whenever appropriate, therefore, students should be encouraged to use ICT to support and communicate their learning. Current technologies are useful both as research tools and as creative media. For example, online dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, and other reference works may be helpful tools for students when conducting research. (The Ontario Curriculum: French as a Second Language Programs, Core French – Grades 4-8, Extended French –Grades 4-8, French Immersion- Grades 1-8, 2013, p.49).
Universalis Junior and Universalis Senior are online encyclopedias that can be used to support student research and inquiry in a variety of grade levels across all FSL programs. These digital tools include thousands of entries, geography resources, engaging videos, as well as, vocabulary tools to assist second language learning for all students such as “read-aloud” technology.
The French Carousels can be used to support the Grades 1-6 curriculum in our Extended French and French Immersion programs and have been used with permission from the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario.
Please see below to learn more about accessing these digital tools.
